OUR STORY
Cô Chung (Aunty Chung) – my kids’ friends, my co – workers always call me by this sweet name. It was my “trademark” when they talk about my good food. Money can’t buy happiness but somehow my food does. Cooking is my life trophy.
My hometown was a small valley where river and our fertile farm lie. My simple happiness after school was running as fast as I can to see the smoke from my mom’s kitchen. I knew good food was waiting for me there. My childhood was the memory of picking young jackfruit, green papaya from neighbors and create my own salad. Until now, I still can remember how good it tasted.
The local market was just 5 – min walk from my home. I helped my mom bringing our farm vegetable to sell there. I was in love with the sounds and the atmosphere of early morning market, with the fresh vegetable, the new – caught fishes and the hot flesh. I am addicted to the smell of breakfast choices in this market: hot noodle, sticky rice, ginger tofu soup, crispy meat breads.
I was still young when my dad passed away, as a big sister my mom authorized me to cook for the family. Going to the early market and select the fresh food was my unbeatable happiness at that time and until now. This clearly was how I start my passionate in cooking. I always wanted to be educated as a professional cook but my chance hadn’t come yet.
Finally, being a nurse was the choice of my career. Not only taking care of my patients in a professional way at the hospital but I also treat my colleagues with good food in the same way. Despite how busy I am as a Head of nurse; I never forget my primary dream. I always took the responsibility in preparing and cooking for my department’s parties or picnics. I understand their common tastes to choose the suitable dishes for everyone.
Any new cuisine with exclusive taste whenever I eat outside, I have a great sense of their ingredients and afterwards can cook exactly the same. Being at the kitchen for hours never make me feel tired, I have special love for the smoke and the heat from the loving kitchen. Days by days, I learnt from my own experiences to create more good food with new ways of cooking but still keep the authentic taste of Vietnam cuisine.
Being retired since now, I am once again having another chance to fulfill my undone dream. I am having a great “fan club” is my supporters: my family, my kid’s friends, my colleagues and I would love to have you all in soon. With the passion, the tenderness and absolute hygiene running in my nurse’s blood, I am confident to manage my own Vietnamese kitchen world.
My mom was a best cook I ever knew, I was inspired by her. I was also passing the cooking passion to my daughter. And I believe my daughter will again pass this legacy to my niece. On and on, we keep the warmth in our Vietnamese kitchen, generations by generations.
